the Imperial Bank of China in Shanghai, and that the same
Bank had been instructed to purchase the balance in sterling
at current rates. I mas asked to impart this information
by telegraph to Sir Frederick Lugard with a view to His Ex-
cellency authorising the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank at Shang-
hai to receive the full payment.
With this roquest I complied without delay and
have since received a Despatch from the Governor,pointing out
that this alteration by telegram in the method of payment
on the very date of payment had occasioned some inconvenience
and asking us to arrange that in future any departure from
the established method of payment should be proposed in time
for full consideration and decision by ordinary correspon-
dence. The Hongkong Goverment, it was added, was prepared
to accept future payments in Lorrion instead of in liongkong
subject to full notice being given in each caso.
